Germany to send two Skynex air defense systems to Ukraine
Germany will send two Skynex short-range air defense systems to Ukraine. They will arrive by the end of 2023.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Armin Papperger, the Rheinmetall AG's Chairman, announced this.
Papperger said that the German government ordered the Skynex systems to be manufactured by his company. The cost of the two systems is 212 million dollars.
For reference:
The Rheinmetall AG presented the Skynex air defense system in November 2021. Its main armament is a 35-mm automatic cannon Oerlikon Mk3. The firing range is 4,000 meters, and the rate of fire is 1,000 rounds per minute.
Skynex is designed for short-range air defense.
The system can shoot down drones or cruise missiles with 35 mm ammunition.
Rheinmetall's programmable 35 mm "Ahead" ammunition is significantly cheaper than similar air defense systems based on guided missiles. These ammunitions are not affected by electronic countermeasures when fired.
