China blocked communiqué of G20 summit condemning russia’s invasion of Ukraine – Reuters

On February 25, the delegations of China and russia blocked the communique of the G20 summit, which was supposed to condemn the russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition, India, which is the president of the G20 this year, insisted that the word "war" should not be used in the document.

As reported by Reuters, the United States and its G7 allies were adamant in demanding a communique to condemn the russian federation for the invasion directly.

It should be noted that India organized the summit of finance ministers and central bank governors of the G20.

A senior G20 source said negotiations over the communique were difficult because russia and China blocked Western proposals.

According to the sources, a consensus on the communique is unlikely to be reached, and the meeting will likely end with the host's statement summarising the discussions.

As Rubryka wrote, on February 23, India and China abstained when the UN overwhelmingly voted to demand that russia withdraw its troops from Ukraine and cease hostilities.

It should be noted that this week the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China published the so-called "peace plan" with its ideas regarding the settlement of russia's war against Ukraine.

It consists of 12 points and calls for a ceasefire and the resumption of talks but does not include specific steps to be taken.

President Volodymyr Zelensky believes there are points in China's plan that can be worked with, although he disagrees with "some opinions."

At the same time, US President Joe Biden rejected China's proposals to end the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he assumed that its implementation would only benefit russia.
