EU fails to reach agreement on new russia sanctions

A day before the anniversary of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the permanent representatives of the EU states in Brussels were unable to agree on the tenth package of sanctions against russia.

Rikard Jozwiak, the Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe reporter, said this on Twitter.

"EU ambassadors didn't manage to agree on a new package of sanctions against russia today. Meeting to resume at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow", the journalist noted.

Earlier, the EU High Representative Josep Borrell expressed confidence the tenth package of sanctions against russia will be adopted by February 24 – the anniversary of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

The new EU sanctions package includes restrictions on more than 60 russian officials and politicians. Some of them are believed to be involved in the campaign to forcibly expulse Ukrainian children to russia.

Ukraine has called on the EU to go further, but opposition from states including Hungary, Bulgaria, France and Belgium means the bloc would not, for now, restrict cooperation with russia's nuclear industry or stop importing diamonds.

The US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said a new package of sanctions against Russia would be announced by the United States on February 24, the anniversary of the full-scale russia's war in Ukraine.
