Japan pledges new $5.5 bn financial aid package for Ukraine
Japan will provide a new financial support package for Ukraine for $5.5 billion, says Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
"Ukraine is still suffering from the russian invasion, and its people need help to rebuild their daily lives and infrastructure, which was badly damaged by the russian attacks," Kisida said, speaking at a global forum in Tokyo, AP reports.
The head of the Japanese government, this year's G7 president, added that he would hold an online summit of the G7 countries on the anniversary of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky will also take part in the event.
Japan has joined the US and the EU in imposing sanctions against russia over its invasion and providing humanitarian and economic support to Ukraine.
Speaking on Monday, Kishida said Japan reacted quickly because of "strong concern that Ukraine may be tomorrow's East Asia."
Earlier, the Japanese government allocated $170 million for Ukraine, directed to emergency recovery projects, particularly the reconstruction of critical infrastructure.
