EU ambassador reveals upcoming EU-Ukraine summit agenda

Issues to be discussed at the EU-Ukraine Summit include the military situation, President Volodymyr Zelensky's peace plan, and partner support for Ukraine, the Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, told journalists, Ukrinform reports.

"First, it is a signal of solidarity with Ukraine. Among the issues that will be discussed are, of course, the military situation and President Zelensky's peace plan, which has received support from the EU. We see delays in aid to Ukraine in the military, economic, financial, humanitarian, and energy fields, etc.," the diplomat said.

According to Maasikas, Brussels is also discussing Ukraine's progress in working on EU recommendations related to granting the candidate status for EU membership.

"So the range of issues is quite large,"  the head of the EU representative office in Ukraine stated.

He also noted that the speed of any integration process depends primarily on the candidate's actions, mainly on how quickly EU legislation will be adopted and implemented. The ongoing assessment of Ukraine's progress in implementation is continuing.

As reported, the Ukraine-EU Summit will take place on February 3.

On 28 February 2022, shortly after the start of russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine applied for membership in the European Union. The presidents of eight EU states called for an accelerated accession process.

In June 2022, the European Commission recommended granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership, provided that Ukraine implements seven recommendations related to the fight against corruption and money laundering, the adoption of anti-oligarchic legislation, and a new law on mass media, ensuring the rights of national minorities, and constitutional, anti-corruption and judicial reforms.

On June 23, 2022, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the immediate granting of candidate status for EU membership to Ukraine. On the same day, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate for accession to the EU.
