Hungary will not support EU sanctions against russia’s nuclear power industry

Hungary cannot support any EU sanctions directed against the nuclear power industry of the russian federation. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto.

As the media outlet states, the head of the country's Foreign Ministry noted that his colleague from Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, demanded that the russian nuclear power industry be subject to sanctions. In response, Szijjarto emphasized that the past year clearly indicates that sanctions are causing more damage to Europe than to russia.

"The government signed contracts to construct a new nuclear power plant 9 years ago, and the country's energy supply is not guaranteed without constructing Paksh-2 in the future. Therefore, Hungary will not support any sanctions measures that affect nuclear energy," Szijjarto stressed, adding that there are no compromises in the country's energy supply.

The minister said that he has appealed to the European Commission that if a proposal for sanctions is made, it should not affect nuclear energy. Szijjarto noted that the Hungarian side might even propose its own sanctions plan in the second half of the week.
