There are no prerequisites for achieving peace in Ukraine soon — UN Secretary-General

Currently, there are no prerequisites for achieving peace in the near future in accordance with the principles of international law. Although sooner or later, the war unleashed by russia against Ukraine will end.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated this at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the correspondent of Ukrinform reports.

"This war will definitely end because everything ends sooner or later. But I do not think that this will happen in the near future.

I do not see the possibility of conducting serious peace talks between the two countries (Ukraine and the russian federation – ed.). russia's attack on Ukraine is a violation of the principle of international law and the UN Charter," the UN Secretary-General said.

The head of the United Nations emphasized that now both sides have fundamental differences regarding the past, so it is difficult to find a solution.

"This only complicates the situation, but the decision should be based on the principles of international law and compliance with the principles of territorial integrity. I don't see any prerequisites for this in the near future," Guterres emphasized.

At the same time, he noted:

• the work of the Black Sea Grain Initiative,
• efforts to rescue civilians and exchange prisoners of war.

Guterres also said that further activities should be aimed at reducing the suffering of people and the consequences of this war for the world economy.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized that russia's war against Ukraine has global consequences.

In this context, he mentioned the rise in energy and food prices and the issue of nuclear safety.

Guterres noted that the world should be united to solve global problems. At the same time, he noted that now is the highest level of geopolitical separation and called for global reform.

It should be noted that the World Economic Forum (WEF) started in Davos, Switzerland, on Monday, January 16.
