Activists made a clean-up day on January 1 after russia attacked prominent university in Kyiv

On December 31,  russia shelled Ukrainian cities with particular brutality, Kyiv was on the list of priority targets for the occupiers. One of the enemy rockets fell on the territory of the Taras Shevchenko KNU Sports Complex, and the blast wave mutilated all the surrounding buildings: the faculty of mechanics and mathematics, the faculties of cybernetics and sociology, radiophysics, electronics and computer systems, the corps of biologists, geographers and psychologists.

Rubryka showed photos of the place where the rocket fell. Today, the buildings of the National University named Taras Shevchenko are already full of excitement. Workers, teachers and students have gathered here since the morning to clear the debris at their native faculties.

Glass is scattered everywhere, black holes instead of windows and dozens of people who looked with despair at such familiar but broken walls. Someone carries glass, someone sorts the waste of destruction, and someone records the damage caused by the occupiers.

Yesterday, those on duty were told that if I had stood there a little longer, I would have been hit by the shock wave. I had just driven three kilometers away and heard the explosions. I was immediately called by the heads of several corps, and I came back. Plus, my place is nearby, on Williams, so I called my neighbors on the way to see if everyone was safe.

We would like to remind you that another rocket fell yesterday in the private sector on Williams Street, the report from there was published by "Rubrika" yesterday. According to Volodymyr Bugrov, at the time of the explosion, there were about 150 people in the building, mostly security personnel.

Fortunately, everyone survived and was not injured, but yesterday's events were a significant psychological blow for them.

"To say that everyone is upset is an understatement. We are still eliminating the consequences of the shelling on October 10, in the red and yellow (Institute of Philology, — ed.) buildings, and in the Maksymovich Library and at the Faculty of Chemistry, the restoration of windows and doors is just being completed. And here the trouble is much more. Soviet-style buildings built in the 1970s and 1980s with glass walls. Glass for them is currently almost impossible to find. We will have to develop a complete renovation project," says Volodymyr Bugrov.

КНУ, корпусиEnemy propaganda is already actively promoting the message that the blame for the destruction of the university buildings lies with Ukrainian air defense, which "unsuccessfully" knocked the missile off its course. But this is a change of concepts. The rockets would not fall if they were not launched by the enemy. russia is entirely responsible for it. This is what the rector says.

"We were supposed to start building a new dormitory near the university clinic. Now, because of russia's aggression, instead of building something new, we have to rebuild what was destroyed. Auditoriums, stained glass windows, and laboratories were hit. We will be able to assess the true scale of the damage already when we remove the main glass and the consequences of the destruction and people can return to work."

Fortunately, the weather these days is kind to Ukrainians, the yard is dry and has spring-like warmth. This makes it possible to protect premises with broken windows from further damage. Today, the debris will be removed here and the windows will be covered with film. But full recovery will require much more effort.

"We have opened the university's account, the funds go directly to the treasury so that there can be no question of any speculation. You can go to the site and send donations, and in the purpose of payment, indicate which corps you want to help.

We will be very grateful to everyone because the losses are huge. It was necessary to collect 99 million only for the restoration of the buildings that were damaged on October 10. And here everything is much worse," concludes the rector.

Together with Volodymyr Bugrov, "Rubryka" invites you to join the restoration of the university. Official details can be found at the link: https://rebuild.knu.ua
