Ukrainian people received Sakharov Prize from European Parliament

On December 14, the European Parliament held a ceremony to award the Sakharov Prize "For Freedom of Thought 2022" to the Ukrainian people.

It should be noted that during the ceremony in the European Parliament, President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke via video link.

He stated that this year the prize was awarded to "the brave Ukrainian people, represented by the President of Ukraine, elected leaders, and civil society."

"I am grateful to all leaders and states, to all politicians and international organizations who work together with us and make every possible effort to create a tribunal regarding the crime of russia's aggression against Ukraine. I call on all of you, your parties and states, to effectively support this work!" he declared.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, noted earlier in her speech that at the moment there is no one more worthy of this award than Ukraine.

"There is no one more worthy of this award. This award is for Ukrainians who fight at the front, those who were forced to leave, those who lost family and friends, and all those who stand up and fight for what they believe in. I know that the brave people of Ukraine will not give up, and we are with them," Metsola said.

The Andrei Sakharov Freedom of Thought Award was established in 1988 by the European Parliament and is awarded annually to those who defend human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Last year, it was received by the russian opposition leader Oleksiy Navalny.

In 2020, the Belarusian opposition led by Svitlana Tikhanouskaya. In 2019, the laureate of the Sakharov Prize was the Ukrainian director and former political prisoner Oleg Sentsov.
