Support for Ukraine will last as long as it's needed – US Treasury
The US government will continue to provide financial support to Ukraine amid the devastating russian aggression against the country.
US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said this in an interview with the 60 Minutes program on the American TV channel CBS News.
When she was asked how long financial support for Ukraine could last after the US committed $38 billion to military aid to Ukraine and an additional $13 billion in direct aid to prop up the Ukrainian economy, she replied: "For as long as it takes."
Secretary Yellen told CBS that outside of the US economy, she spends the most time and effort on russia's war in Ukraine.
CBS reports that the only nation's flag they saw in the halls of treasury besides the US flag was Ukraine's blue and yellow.
Yellen also explained why Western countries introduced a price cap for russian oil at 60 dollars per barrel.
"The first goal is to limit the revenue that Russia receives. And we wanna make sure that they don't get windfall profits. But the second goal is one that concerns Americans and countries all around the world, and that is we wanna keep Russian oil flowing because Russia is a significant supplier of oil to the markets. So, those are our two goals, suppress Russian revenue, make it more difficult for them to fight the war, and keep global prices in a moderate range, and avoid spikes," the minister said.
According to Yellen's deputy Wally Adeyemo, now the leading russian tank manufacturers have stopped their activities and announced it publicly because they cannot get the necessary equipment, alluding to the fact that existing economic sanctions work.
"I won't tell you about any intelligence that I've seen. But I can tell you Russia's top tank producers have shut down their operations, and they've made this public because they can't get the equipment that they need," he said.
He added that limiting russia's supply of everything from microchips to ball bearings had made a difference on the battlefield.
