European Parliament finally approved updated rules for EU critical infrastructure protection

The European Parliament has finally approved the updated rules for improving the protection of critical infrastructure of the countries of the European Union.

This is discussed in the message of the press service, which is at the disposal of the EP.

The updated rules are expected to harmonize the definition of critical infrastructure so that it is mutually compatible for different countries of the bloc.

The press service noted that:

• 595 deputies voted "for"
• "against" – 17,
  refrained – 24.

The legislation covers 11 areas:

• energy,
• transport,
• the infrastructure of the banking system and financial markets,
• digital infrastructure,
• water supply and drainage,
• the entire chain of the food industry,
• the infrastructure of the health care system, state institutions,

And it also strengthens the risk assessment and reporting requirements for agents deemed to belong to critical infrastructure.

Under the new rules, member states must approve national sustainability strategies and support cross-border communication on these issues in a defined manner.

To ensure transparency, agents considered part of critical infrastructure must inform national authorities of any incidents or problems, and authorities must notify the public if this is in the public interest.

In the previous version of the directive on critical infrastructure, only energy infrastructure and transport fell into the common framework of European rules. The new legislation is also aligned with the recently adopted Cyber ​​Security Directive.
