russians will not leave rest of occupied Ukraine without fight — Pentagon
The liberation of Kherson from the occupying russian forces was a significant victory for Ukraine, but the invaders do not seem to be going to leave the rest of the occupied territories, and therefore heavy fighting will continue for them
As EP reports, this was stated at a briefing by Pentagon's high-ranking representative.
"Although we continue to observe, according to our estimates, russian troops have moved to the eastern bank of the river and established their defensive lines, thereby ceding a large part of the territory to the Ukrainians, including the city of Kherson," he said.
The official emphasized that the Ukrainian forces continue consolidating the successes and are now busy clearing barriers and mines left by the russians.
Ukrainians also assess the damage caused by the russian invaders before their departure.
According to the Pentagon representative, there are reasons to believe that the russians have caused significant damage to Kherson's civilian infrastructure. Namely, water supply and other utility systems.
"The russians, it seems, are not going to leave the other part of occupied Ukraine, and there is no doubt that there are still heavy battles ahead.
But the liberation of the city of Kherson is a significant achievement and a testament to the resilience, determination, and perseverance of the Ukrainian people and their armed forces in the struggle to defend their country," he emphasized.
The Pentagon believes that with the approach of winter, it is possible that hostilities in Ukraine may slow down.
However, the official noted that the growth rate of US support is not predicted to slow down since this support does not depend on the weather but on what Ukrainians need.
Earlier, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace said russia's retreat from Kherson marks another strategic failure for moscow.
EU Ambassador Matti Maasikas commented on the entry of the Armed Forces of Ukraine into Kherson with the words that Europe is returning to Kherson with Ukraine.
