German justice minister visits Ukraine to support russian war criminals prosecution

Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann arrived on November 4 on a working visit to Ukraine.

The ministry's Twitter announced this.

"We stand firmly on the side of Ukraine. Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann left last night to visit the country. One thing is clear: we provide financial, military, and humanitarian support, and we will continue to do so. We will not give up freedom and justice!" the post says.

The program of the visit includes negotiations with the Ukrainian authorities and human rights defenders.

The main topic of the negotiations is the international prosecution of war criminals. Germany wants to support Ukraine in this matter, and German legislation allows the possibility of prosecuting criminals for crimes committed outside the territory of Germany.

During his visit to the UN in October, Buschmann emphasized that "freedom and security in the world have a future only when the international community puts russia in its place."

In addition, the parties will discuss plans for cooperation in the justice field, including Ukraine's future accession to the EU.

German justice already has experience in prosecuting war crimes committed abroad. Thus, in January, the Higher Regional Court of Koblenz sentenced the former head of the prison interrogation department of Syria's special services to life imprisonment.

Ukraine advocates the creation of a special tribunal to prosecute russian citizens for committing war crimes in Ukraine. Kyiv believes that the tribunal should consider the crime of aggression under international law.
