Latvia restricts entry of russian citizens with Schengen visas

Latvia has restricted the entry of russian citizens with Schengen visas since September 19 for security reasons.

It was announced on Twitter by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.

"russians, do not ask to cross the border, you are not expected here, stop the war against Ukraine and get out of this beautiful country!" the message reads.

On the eve of the first reading, the Sejm of Latvia supported amendments to the law on immigration, which provided for a change in the procedure for requesting and extending a temporary residence permit for citizens of russia and Belarus.

The amendments are intended to suspend the possibility of extending temporary residence permits for citizens of russia and Belarus who received a residence permit based on investments made or the purchase of real estate in Latvia.

Reference

The EU is currently not introducing a general ban on tourist trips by russians, as a number of countries, including Hungary, have opposed it.

However, on September 12, the EU Council's decision to suspend the visa facilitation agreement with the russian federation entered into force. The process of obtaining visas to EU countries for russians has become much longer and more expensive.
