17-year-old Ukrainian awarded at iCAN for freshwater jellyfish study

17-year-old Varvara Khimchyk from Dnipro won silver at the International Invention Innovation Competition held in Canada

The press service of the Dnipro regional military administration reported this.

The competition took place in an online format. 

As the statement says, the girl presented research on freshwater jellyfish.

This development will help predict the spread of jellyfish in water bodies throughout Europe because their excessive number leads to fish death.

"It's nice that my efforts were appreciated. Victory itself is not important to me. I'm glad I had the honor of representing my country at the international level," Varvara said.

The study results were published in the Polish magazine World Scientific News.

"I conducted the experiment with the scientific supervisor in several stages. During the expedition, 50 jellyfish were selected at the Dnipro Reservoir.

We carefully studied the peculiarities of their reproduction. Such a study was conducted in Ukraine for the first time," the winner explained.

It's known that Varvara Khimchyk is a student of the regional branch of the Minor Academy of Sciences and a graduate of the Medical Lyceum.

iCAN is an international competition for innovative inventions. Every year it brings together scientists from all over the world.

This year it was held online.

Six hundred eight scientists from 61 countries took part in the competition. Ten scientists represented Ukraine. They won 4 gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.

In the Volyn region, school teachers created solar chargers for Ukrainian defenders.
