Verkhovna Rada appealed to world community about russia's intention to hold trial of prisoners of war
Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal to the world community regarding recognizing the actions of the russian federation concerning Ukrainian prisoners of war as violating the norms and principles of international humanitarian law, in connection with the intentions of the invaders to arrange a so-called military tribunal.
People's deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak reported this on Telegram.
309 parliamentarians voted for the adoption of the relevant resolution 7709.
In the appeal, Verkhovna Rada calls on the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the parliaments and governments of the world to condemn the actions of the russian federation and the occupation administrations controlled by it, aimed at preparing the so-called military tribunal over prisoners of war of Ukraine, in particular, combatants of the "Azov" regiment, as violating the rights of prisoners of war to an impartial and fair trial, stipulated by the Geneva Convention and a number of other international documents.
The Parliament calls on the world to strongly condemn the actions of the Russian Federation, which, in violation of its obligations to the UN and the ICRC regarding prisoners of war of Ukraine who laid down their arms on the terms of their further exchange, holds them as hostages, threatening them with a shameful trial without observing the guarantees of a fair trial with the threat of using to them the death penalty.
The People's Deputies appeal to the world community to make all possible efforts to avert this theatrical trial, aimed at the physical destruction of Ukrainian prisoners of war, which will have no legal consequences, to resolutely condemn and hold the russian federation responsible for numerous violations of the norms of international humanitarian law, international human rights law regarding ensuring the rights of prisoners of war committed during the international armed conflict unleashed by it on Ukraine's territory.
In addition, Verkhovna Rada calls on the international community to make efforts to stop russian violations of the norms of international humanitarian law and to comply with international legal obligations regarding the treatment of prisoners of war defenders of Ukraine.
As reported, in the temporarily captured Mariupol, russians are planning to hold a show trial of Ukrainian defenders.
