IAEA experts arrive in Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission has arrived in Ukraine and will head to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in the coming days, TSN reports.

As noted, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, called this mission, without exaggeration, the most difficult in the history of the agency.

After all, according to the foreign minister, it is necessary to consider the active military actions and means used by russia to legitimize its presence at the ZNPP.

Neither Americans nor Britons are among the thirteen experts selected by the IAEA Secretary General, which he heads.

russia forced them to be excluded from the list.

However, there are no russians either, but there are experts from Poland and Lithuania who are friendly to Ukraine.

At the same time, there are citizens of Serbia and China who are more loyal to the Kremlin. The New York Times learned about others from France, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Albania, and North Macedonia.

In such a diplomatically, as the IAEA believes, balanced composition, they will go to inspect the ZNPP shortly.

The mission has three tasks:

  • physical protection,
  • nuclear safety,
  • nuclear materials non-proliferation guarantees.

The invaders are doing everything possible to disrupt the visit.

It is reported that with the last shelling, they hit between the second and third reactors; satellite images of the Maxar Technologies company confirm this.

russia's spokesperson peskov stated that russia would not demilitarize the zone around the nuclear plant.

The invaders intensified the pressure on the employees so that they would not testify about the inhuman working conditions under the 24-hour supervision of the occupiers.

"We expect from the mission a clear statement about the facts of violation of all nuclear safety protocols. We know that russia exposes not only Ukraine but the whole world to the risk of a nuclear incident.

The international community should be united by one demand – the withdrawal of russian troops from the ZNPP," said Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba.

The situation at the ZNPP, seized by the occupiers in March, worsened almost a month ago.

The russians have not only placed military equipment at the nuclear plant but are also shelling it, blaming it on the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Last week, after the russian shelling, for the first time in history, the ZNPP was entirely disconnected from the power grid.

"Recently, we have done everything possible to help organize the IAEA mission. I myself spoke to Grossi on the phone before he left for Ukraine.

We share a common concern: nuclear security must not suffer in this war. That is why the mission is critical; it must preserve this station and support safety in the entire region," said French President Emmanuel Macron.

The specialists of the State Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority calculate the direction of the wind and the potential contamination of the territories in the event of an accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant every day.

In Zaporizhzhia, potassium iodide tablets are distributed to citizens, one per person. This daily dose should be sufficient in case of a powerful release of radioactive iodine into the air.

By themselves, they are quite harmful to health; they are not recommended at all for people over forty. But security protocols dictate that they be issued to those who are near the station and will not be able to evacuate urgently.

Medical workers and the authorities urge citizens not to engage in self-medication under any circumstances and to take pills only if the invaders bring the nuclear plant into great trouble.
