Reuters reports, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
The sources said that Biden would approve the aid, using his powers that allow the president to authorize the transfer of surplus weapons from the US stockpile.
The sources noted that the announcement might be made next week. They also warned that the cost of the aid package could change.
On August 17, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov announced new security assistance from the United States after a conversation with US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin. The day before, the Pentagon showed how a plane for Ukraine was loaded with ammunition.
In late April, the United States announced that it would send another $800 million security package and an additional $500 million in direct economic assistance to Ukraine.
"This is money the government can help use to stabilize their economy, to support communities that have been devastated by the Russian onslaught, and pay the brave workers that continue to provide essential services to the people of Ukraine," President Joe Biden said from the Roosevelt Room of the White House.
In early April, President Joe Biden announced sending Ukraine $800 million in new firepower, including artillery, helicopters, and ammunition. It includes heavy artillery systems and armored personnel carriers, signaling a more intense military commitment from what began as shipments of more defensive materiel.
"The Ukrainian military has used the weapons we are providing to devastating effect. As russia prepares to intensify its attack in the Donbas region, the United States will continue to provide Ukraine with the capabilities to defend itself," Biden said in a statement after the call with Zelensky.
