Case of West Nile fever was recorded in Kyiv region

For the first time this year, a case of West Nile fever was recorded in Brovary, Kyiv region

Rubryka informs about this, referring to the statement of the acting director of the district branch of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Vasyl Sych.

As noted, this disease is transmitted through mosquito bites.

The official reported that the disease was diagnosed in a pensioner who was admitted to the hospital.

The woman had a "bouquet" of diseases accompanied by a high temperature.

"During a complex laboratory examination, the doctors established an exotic diagnosis for the patient," Vasyl Sych emphasized.

He also added that 5 cases of West Nile fever were recorded in Ukraine last year, 3 of them in the Kyiv region.

What is the West Nile virus, and how is it transmitted?

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

This disease is reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cases of the disease occur during the mosquito season, which usually begins in the summer and lasts until the fall.

They emphasized that an infected person is not contagious.

Currently, there are no vaccines or drugs against fever. Most infected people do not experience symptoms of the disease.

About 1 in 5 infected people develop a fever accompanied by headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash.

In about 1 in 150 patients, the virus can cause severe and sometimes fatal consequences.

Symptoms of a severe stage of the disease:

• high temperature;
• headache;
• disorientation;
• coma;
• trembling;
• convulsions;
• muscle weakness;
• loss of vision;
• numbness;
• paralysis.

Severe disease can occur in people of any age; however, patients over 60 are at greater risk of serious disease.

Protecting yourself from mosquito bites is the best way to prevent the West Nile virus.

Doctors advise:

• screen the windows
• carry out disinsection,
• use insect repellents,
• when outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.
