Canada allocates $6 mln to strengthen Ukraine’s nuclear security

Canada has announced the allocation of $6 million for several projects to help strengthen Ukraine's nuclear security.

The Permanent Mission of Canada to the UN announced it on Twitter.

"Canada continues to condemn the unjustifiable Russian invasion of Ukraine, including Russian aggressions at or near nuclear facilities," the statement said.

"To help strengthen nuclear security in Ukraine, Canada has provided:

$1M to IAEA to strengthen security, safety, and safeguards at Ukrainian nuclear facilities, and $5M to US State Department to help Ukraine detect and respond to illicit nuclear trafficking in its territory," the department added.

The Canadian mission added that the continued occupation of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant places the global population at risk.

"Continued destabilization by Russian forces not only increases the risk of an accident or inadvertent damage but also increases the possibility of diversion of nuclear material," the representative office emphasized.

Earlier, Rubryka reported that russia fires artillery and uses the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant as a shield, citing British intelligence.

The agency emphasized that the actions of the russian invaders undermined the safety of the nuclear facility.

"Following five months of occupation, Russia's intentions regarding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant remain unclear. However, the actions they have undertaken at the facility have likely undermined the security and safety of the plant's normal operations," the British Ministry of Defense said.

Rubryka also reported that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with the financial support of Canada, has launched a project worth 52 million Canadian dollars (40 million US dollars) to solve the problem of the shortage of grain warehouses in Ukraine.
