Ukraine’s new prosecutor general backs appointment of anti-corruption prosecutor

Oleksandr Klymenko, a detective of Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), became the Chief of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office or SAPO.

"The head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office was appointed today.

Oleksandr Klymenko became an anti-corruption prosecutor. The Competition Commission announced him as the winner of the fair selection. He was confirmed to the position by the new Prosecutor General Andrii Kostin immediately after his appointment," said the Chief-of-Staff Yermak.

"I congratulate Andrii Kostin on starting work as the head of the Prosecutor General's Office and Oleksandr Klymenko on his appointment as the head of the SAPO. I wish you effective work. An independent anti-corruption infrastructure is an important component of democracy in Ukraine," he added.

Earlier, it was reported that the European Union welcomes the election of the new Prosecutor General of Ukraine and expects the speedy appointment of the SAPO head. The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, congratulated Andrii Kostin on his appointment to the position of Prosecutor General and also emphasized that he cooperated with him on judicial reform.

"We will continue by cooperating on russian war crimes. And, looking forward to the nomination of the SAPO Head soon," he wrote on Twitter.

As Rubryka reported, Rep. Spartz voiced new concerns about Zelensky's Chief-of-Staff. In the letter to Biden, Spartz claims that Yermak is delaying the appointment of an anti-corruption prosecutor.

Oleksandr Klymenko is a NABU detective who won the competition in December last year. Andrii Syniuk, a prosecutor from the Prosecutor General's Office with 229 points, was supposed to become his deputy.

However, on December 21, the commission members refused to vote on determining the winner of the selection and referring him to the Prosecutor General for the appointment.

In January, Klymenko reported that the Prosecutor General's Office personnel units had lost his documents. The competition commission approved the election results on July 19, 2022.

The position of the SAPO chief has been vacant since August 2020, when prosecutor Nazar Kholodnytskyi resigned. Maksym Hryschuk performed the duties of the anti-corruption prosecutor.

The appointment of an independent head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office is one of the main requirements for Ukraine from international partners.
