2022 Earth Overshoot Day is today, 28 July
This means that since the beginning of 2022 humanity has already used as many resources as the planet can reproduce in a year.
The Global Footprint Network (GFN) has been calculating Earth Overshoot Day since the end of 1970 using the formula: global biomass / global ecological footprint × 365.
Earth Overshoot Day lands on 28 July. It means that tomorrow the number of renewable resources used by humans exceeds the limit the earth is able to reproduce in a year.
Overall, the trend is negative. Every year we use resources faster. Last year, the Earth Overshoot Day landed on a day later than previously, on July 29. In 2020 it occurred on August 28, and 50 years ago – at the end of December.
