The highest level of alert was prompted, and 51 people evacuated.

Yoshihiko Isozaki, the Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Cabinet Office, noted that casualties or damage reports haven't been received yet.

Volcanic stones fell at a distance of 2.5 km from the volcano. The "Sendai" nuclear power plant is situated about 50 km from the volcano. No violations were found there.

Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan with regular eruptions of various levels. In 2019 it released ash to 5,5 km height.
