Thermal power plants shelling may cause ecological catastrophe

An environmental monitoring expert said that the destruction of the critical infrastructure of cities would lead to massive wood cutting in winter. It will have long-term environmental consequences

The russians are deliberately destroying Ukrainian critical infrastructure: on July 18, the russists shelled the Kryvorizka Thermal Power Plant, on June 22 they attacked the most powerful Vuhlehirska Thermal Power Plant in Ukraine in the Donetsk region, and the Okhtyr Thermal Power Plant suffered a lot due to the aggression of the russians. The funds allocated by the Cabinet of Ministers for the repair of the TPP will not be enough; therefore, Ukrainians are at risk of being left without heat this winter, Rubryka writes.

According to environmental monitoring expert Maksym Soroka, it may lead to a real ecological catastrophe with long-term consequences.

If the local authorities do not have time to decide on introducing heat energy alternatives to damaged TPP, people will look for solutions on their own. A scenario in which massive wood cutting will begin and harmful emissions into the air will increase many times is entirely possible:

"All these low-power plants, mobile heat points, mobile solid fuel boilers that can be connected modularly to the system and provide heat are low-efficient and lead to higher emission of pollutants into the environment. And there will be a second wave of pollution due to the thermal power plants shelling. The environmental damage will be terrible, but it is something that must be done. But we have to take care of our population, and think about restoring the environment," Maksym Soroka states.
