Hromadske reports.
The event took place at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
Among the prominent scientists is the Ukrainian Olena Vanieieva, doctor of physical and mathematical sciences and Institute of Mathematics deputy director for scientific work at Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences.
Olena represented Ukraine on the world stage and entered the TOP-15 of the International Young Talents award.
"It is a great honor for me to be the first Ukrainian among the International Young Talents of the For Women in Science award and to represent our country on the world stage in such a difficult time.
It is essential to show that Ukraine has a high scientific potential," says Olena.
The last three years have been among the most difficult for science. Women have been on the front lines of the pandemic, tackling climate change, disease, and the health crisis.
Recognizing their contributions and achievements is fundamental in overcoming gender barriers in science.
The latest data from UNESCO shows that the number of women developing their scientific careers is gradually increasing. Among all researchers in the world, only one in three is women.
There is an impassable barrier in scientific research: only 14% of top scientific positions in Europe are held by women, and only 4% of Nobel Prizes in science are awarded to women.
Reference
The For Women in Science International Awards was created in 1998 and is led by the L'Oréal Foundation in partnership with UNESCO.
The award is aimed at increasing the level of representation of women in science and is based on the fact that the world needs science, and science needs women. The initiative promotes talented women scientists in the recognition they deserve.
This year, at a ceremony at the UNESCO headquarters, 45 women scientists were awarded winners in two areas:
Every year, as part of the International Young Talents program, the international scientific community, with the participation of representatives of the L'Oréal Foundation and UNESCO, selects 15 of the most promising female scientists among the national and regional laureates of the L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Program.
Since the launch of the Women in Science program in 1998, more than 3,900 talented young women scientists have gained recognition and support in 116 countries, and five have won the Nobel Prize.
Award in Ukraine
The Ukrainian For Women in Science award is part of the global L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program.
Ukraine's award aims to support and recognize young women scientists and encourage them to choose scientific professions.
During the four years of the prize's existence in Ukraine, 12 women scientists were honored. Due to the war between russia and Ukraine, the fifth season was postponed to 2023.
