Damage to Ukraine's economy due to russia's destroying infrastructure is $95.5 billion – KSE

As of July 13, the amount of direct losses of the Ukrainian economy due to destruction and damage to infrastructure is 95.9 billion dollars, or 2.6 trillion hryvnias

The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) reports.

As noted by the organization, if compared to June, the number of losses decreased by 8.4 billion dollars, thanks to the updated information.

The KSE reported reduced losses after receiving updated information and micro-data from government agencies. This made it possible to refine the calculations regarding the number and average cost of damages.

The most significant change occurred in the assessment of housing stock losses. This was due to more accurate calculations of the average area of damaged real estate.

"The assessment is the result of joint work of the KSE Institute, the government authorities under the leadership of the Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories, and the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development in cooperation with other ministries under the umbrella of The National Council for the Recovery of Ukraine from the Consequences of the War. The results of this assessment were presented during the international Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2022) in Lugano, and are part of the report on the Ukraine Recovery Plan," the report said.

The KSE also managed to specify the road damage thanks to clarification of the average cost per kilometer and the number of damaged roads in the liberated regions.

However, there was an increase in the estimated kilometers of damaged roads in areas where active hostilities are currently ongoing.

The largest share of losses is:

  • Residential buildings — $36.6 billion, or 38% of all losses. As a result of the war, almost 121,000 residential buildings were destroyed or damaged.
  • Infrastructure destruction of $31.3 billion. 25.4 billion are the damages from the destruction and damage of almost 24 thousand kilometers of roads.
  • Direct losses to enterprises already amount to at least 8 billion. These are the losses of small businesses and large and medium-sized enterprises of state and private ownership.
  • Another 4.3 billion are losses to the agricultural sector and agro-enterprises.

In general, since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, at least:

  • 388 enterprises,
  • 18 civilian airports,
  • 779 medical facilities,
  • 105.2 thousand cars,
  • 1,371 educational institutions,
  • 690 kindergartens,
  • 563 cultural and religious buildings,
  • 23 shopping centers,
  • 28 oil depots.

Ukraine's Ministry of Infrastructure says as of July 5, 43 bridges have already been restored, and 941 km of state roads have been cleaned.
