UNESCO may recognize Ukrainian borscht as a cultural heritage site

Ukrainian borscht can be recognized by UNESCO and enter the list of intangible cultural heritage

It was reported by the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Emine Japarova.

As the government official noted, decisions can be made on July 1.

"In March of last year, the ministry submitted a nomination file for consideration by UNESCO regarding the Ukrainian element "Culture of making Ukrainian Borscht" to the representative list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage of humanity," Japarova says.

The issue was supposed to be considered in 2023, but the war, according to the organization, has created a threat to this cultural heritage site.

Therefore, it was decided to consider the Ukrainian nomination for inclusion in another list — of the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection.

"I note that this is an unprecedented practice for UNESCO when a nomination that is included in the queue of the representative list will be considered on an urgent basis and will be included in another list of the organization," said the deputy minister.

The consideration of the Ukrainian dossier will take place on July 1, 2022, in Paris.

"I believe this will be a truly historic event for Ukraine — the recognition of the uniqueness and identity of the Ukrainian element of intangible cultural heritage. And, at the same time, recognition of its universal value and significance for world culture," says Emine Japarova.

We will remind you that in 2021, Google russia and the Federal Tourism Agency launched the "Taste russia" project, where they published a list of 10 russian dishes, including Ukrainian borscht.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy included borscht in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine.
