NATO to develop measures aimed at reducing dependence on China

The North Atlantic Alliance plans to develop a package of measures aimed at reducing dependence on China after giving up gas and oil from russia.

It was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, at a public NATO forum, the EP reports from Madrid.

According to Stoltenberg, the Alliance has learned from mistakes in relations with russia.

"The war in Ukraine has proved the danger of energy dependence on one authoritarian regime. We must not replace one dependence with another," he explained.

According to him, there is a danger of increasing dependence on China.

"Many renewable energy technologies and rare earth elements come from China. It is important for us not to get a new dependence," he said.

In particular, he stressed that NATO does not aim to quickly and completely abandon fossil fuels. They must be combined with green energy.

Another challenge for the Secretary-General is that NATO countries can choose different approaches to reform in this area.

"I, therefore, propose that NATO's military and civilian structures develop a new transition strategy and present it at a next year summit," Stoltenberg said, expressing confidence that NATO could be a link for such reform, which would not allow NATO states to become dependent on China.
