Experts report that Mariupol is at risk of a major cholera outbreak in the south. Ukrainian forces counterattack and advance in the southern regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. russian forces initially made rapid gains in the south, with their main goal to create a land corridor between Crimea, which it annexed in 2014, and areas held by russian-backed Donetsk and Luhansk "pseudo-republics." But firm resistance from Ukrainian forces near Mykolaiv in the west and Mariupol significantly slowed russian advances.
