European Commission has made no decisions on Ukraine’s candidate status

The European Commission hasn't made any decisions on granting Ukraine the candidate status for EU membership

European Commission spokesperson Eric Mamer stated this at a briefing in Brussels, European Pravda reports.

As noted, the work on the issue continues.

"I read in the press that the Commission has already decided, but this is not true. The Commission decided nothing yesterday. There was a debate that will allow members of the College of Commissioners to express their views and views on this issue to prepare a decision on Friday," Mamer said.

He noted that it was a standard procedure, which can vary in length.

"Now the services are finalizing the documents; there will be a meeting of department heads on Wednesday, which, if all goes well, will confirm the agenda of the board. On Friday, there will be a debate and hopefully a decision," the spokesperson added.

Politico reported that the European Commission planned to recommend granting Ukraine the candidate status for accession to the European Union in its opinion on Ukraine's application to join the EU.

Also, according to media reports, the European Parliament supported the resolution calling for Ukraine to be a candidate for EU membership.

The European Commission has stated that the board will likely consider a draft opinion on Ukraine's, Moldova's, and Georgia's applications for EU membership on June 17.

Recent reports have revealed that Ukraine is being offered only potential candidate status, but this has raised objections in Kyiv, including an unprecedented appeal by Ukrainian NGOs to the EU.
