UN responded to “DPR” imposing a death sentence on foreigners defending Ukraine

The United Nations (UN) believes that the "death sentence" of three foreign fighters by the so-called "DPR court" is a war crime.

UN spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani stated this at a briefing in Geneva, CNN reports.

The UN is concerned about "death sentences" for foreign nationals condemned for allegedly trying to seize power in the so-called "republic,"

The organization notes that the "judiciary" in the "republics" does not adhere to basic guarantees of a fair trial, namely public hearings, the independence and impartiality of the judiciary, and the right not to be compelled to testify.

"Such trials against prisoners of war are a war crime. In the case of the death penalty, guarantees of a fair trial are all the more important," Shamdasani said.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stated that the "trial" of British citizens in occupied Donetsk was worthless and propagandistic.

On June 9, russian state media reported that two British nationals, 28-year-old Aiden Aslin and 48-year-old Sean Pinner, appeared in court in russian-controlled Donetsk. They were found guilty of mercenaries and acts of overthrow attempts of the so-called constitutional order of the unrecognized pseudo-republic of the DPR.

They were reportedly sentenced to death along with Moroccan citizen Saaudun Brahim.
