Spanish government intends to invite Zelensky to Madrid NATO summit

The Spanish government intends to send an official invitation to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to participate in the NATO summit in Madrid on 29 and 30 June.

It was reported by Europa Press, citing sources in the Spanish government.

Spain expects the summit to be attended by 40 to 50 foreign delegations at the level of heads of state or government. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, 30 Allies, four invited countries from the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea), four non-NATO EU countries, and European Commission and European Council leaders are expected to attend.

"The official invitation to the Madrid summit will be sent to Ukraine. Although whether its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, will participate or not, will be known only last minute, as it will be determined by the course of the war and the possibility of leaving the country," Europa Press said.

The publication adds that the final program of the NATO summit is almost ready and must be approved by the Alliance.

At the Madrid Summit, NATO is expected to adopt the first updated Strategic Concept since 2010, which will review relations with russia.

Earlier, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, admitted that he did not expect positive decisions for Ukraine at the Madrid NATO summit on June 28-30.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government is already hinting at Ukraine's move toward NATO amid threats from russia to Finland and Sweden.
