US State Department: peace talks with russia is “not a matter of the near future”

Wars end at the negotiating table, but in the event of russia's war in Ukraine, such talks will obviously not take place soon, so the United States will do everything to strengthen Ukraine's position.

Karen Donfried, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, commented on this, Ukrinform reports.

"I think the comment (President Biden's to the NYT newspaper – ed.) that diplomacy brings wars to an end is very significant. He quoted President Zelensky, saying that ultimately this war will only definitively end through diplomacy," Donfried answered on the US position as to the ways to end the war in Ukraine.

She stressed that President Biden had made it clear that the United States was doing its best for Ukraine to be in the strongest possible position at the negotiating table when the time comes.

"But I think that, unfortunately, this negotiating table is not a matter of the near future," said the US Department of State representative.

In this context, she noted that there are currently no signs that russia will have a bona fide dialogue.

Donfried also reaffirmed the US position on avoiding discussions on the Ukrainian issue without Ukraine.

"We support Ukraine's right to be a free, democratic, and independent state. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. We remain committed to defending Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," she said.

She recalled that since February this year, the United States has provided $ 6.3 billion to Ukraine in defense, humanitarian and economic assistance.

"Ukraine's struggle is our struggle. It is everybody's struggle for democracy and freedom. So we will keep the course together with the people of Ukraine because we understand that freedom is not a gift," Donfried said.
