Bundestag Speaker calls for speeding up Ukraine's accession to the EU

After her visit to Kyiv, Bundestag Speaker Bärbel Bas called for speeding up the process of granting EU membership to Ukraine

She stated this on the air of ZDF.

The publication noted that Bas called for speeding up the procedures "so that you can give perspective" to membership.

"This is very, very important for Ukraine: that they get a road map, a schedule," said the speaker of the Bundestag.

According to Bas, this will make it clear when Ukraine will meet the accession criteria.

"I hope it won't take decades," said Bärbel Bas.

She said she was optimistic, "because we all want Ukraine to join the EU, everything will be accelerated now."

To recap, French President Emmanuel Macron previously lowered Ukraine's expectations for a quick accession to the EU. He noted that the process could take "decades."

He said this in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Monday. Instead, he called for stronger cooperation with Kyiv.

As reported by Rubryka, Ukraine has completed the second part of the questionnaire to obtain the status of a candidate for membership in the European Union.

On February 28, four days after the start of russia's aggression, Ukraine formally applied to Brussels to join the European Union and expressed hope that, given the circumstances, the EU would be able to start the procedure quickly.

As reported by Rubryka, on May 8, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with President of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany Bärbel Bas, who arrived on a working visit to Kyiv.
