"The UN General Assembly has elected Czech Republic to the seat on the Human Rights Council vacated by Russia in April 2022. The Czech Republic retains the seat until 31 December 2023," the statement said.
The Czech Foreign Ministry said it would use the opportunity to promote and protect human rights.
Note
On April 7, the UN General Assembly supported a resolution suspending the russian federation's membership in the UN Human Rights Council. This is the maximum level of punishment in the Human Rights Council; it is impossible to exclude the state. However, as a result, russia was deprived of all procedural rights of members of the Council.
At the same time, no European state supported russia in the vote.
However, russia later announced its "voluntary withdrawal" from the UN Human Rights Council.
The Czech Republic has since submitted its candidacy to replace russia in the body.
