PACE supported establishing an international tribunal on russia’s aggression

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has expressed its full support for all efforts to investigate russia's international crimes in Ukraine.

This was announced on Wednesday evening by the PACE press service, Rubryka reports.

According to the press service, it also called for the establishment of an international tribunal.

The Assembly, which expelled russia, approved the resolution on the basis of a report by German MP Frank Schwabe, head of the Socialist Group in the PACE.

The PACE said it was "concerned about the growing number of testimonies of atrocities committed by the russian armed forces" and expressed full support for all efforts to investigate russia's violations of international human rights and humanitarian law.

As well as other international crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide and ensuring the responsibility of the aggressor.

According to Maria Mezentseva, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Delegation to the Assembly, the PACE calls on the members of the Council of Europe to immediately establish a special international criminal tribunal to investigate and prosecute the crime of aggression committed by the russian political and military leadership and provide necessary financial support.

The resolution also recommends that the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe appoint a special envoy for the consequences of russia's aggression against Ukraine.

The parliamentarians also noted that russia's aggression had provoked the worst humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.

It has challenged global governance and led to sharp increases in energy prices and food insecurity.

The resolution calls for continued pressure on the russian federation to cease hostilities, withdraw troops from Ukraine's sovereign territory and comply with international law.

The document calls for an effort to break energy dependence on the russian federation, accelerating the energy transition and at the same time exploring alternatives to energy imports from the russian federation.

The resolution was supported almost unanimously: 144 voted in favor out of 147 present.

To recap, because of russia's invasion, work is underway to bring to justice leaders of the russian federation personally.

As Rubryka reported, on March 16, after 26 years of membership, russia was expelled from the Council of Europe.

The Secretary-General of the organization received an official notification on March 15 about russia's withdrawal from the Council of Europe.

He also received information about russia's intention to denounce the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

On the same day, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe decided to exclude russia from the organization.

This decision was supported by 46 countries.
