UN Secretary-General arrives in Ukraine
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Ukraine.
He announced this on Twitter.
"I arrived in Ukraine after a visit to Moscow," Guterres wrote.
According to him, the UN will continue its work to expand humanitarian support and ensure the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones.
"The sooner this war ends, the better, for Ukraine, russia, and the world," said the UN Secretary-General.
On Thursday, Guterres will hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.
Note
Yesterday, after a meeting between putin and Guterres, a spokesperson for the UN secretary-general said that putin allegedly agreed to involve UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol. Guterres proposed setting up a humanitarian contact group of representatives from russia, Ukraine, and the United Nations "to find ways to open safe corridors with a local cessation of hostilities, as well as to ensure that they are truly effective."
Today, April 27, the press secretary of the President of russia Dmitry Peskov denied the information of the UN about the agreement with russia on joint participation with the International Committee of the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol Azovstal.
Earlier, Turkey has repeatedly stated its readiness to provide ships for the evacuation of Mariupol residents, as well as to deliver humanitarian aid. Yesterday, before the meeting of the UN Secretary-General with putin, President Erdogan spoke on the last phone. During the conversation, Erdogan stressed the importance of a ceasefire, effective functioning of humanitarian corridors, and safe evacuation and again suggested holding a meeting of the Presidents of Ukraine and russia in Istanbul.
According to UN General Assembly resolutions, russia's invasion of Ukraine is a gross violation of the UN Charter and international law. The documents call on russia to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw troops from Ukraine.
