European Commission expects the sixth package of sanctions against russia this week
European Commission Vice President Vera Yurova expects the sixth package of sanctions against russia to be introduced this week.
This was reported by Euractiv.
"This week I am waiting for the announcement of the sixth package. It depends on achieving the best possible outcome of negotiations with member states. The best result for the Commission is the strictest sanctions. However, it makes no sense to offer something that will not receive support," Yurova said.
She confirmed that the most significant were the discussions on banning the import of russian oil. Poland and the Baltic states are promoting a full energy embargo, while several other countries oppose the move for economic reasons, including Germany, Hungary and Austria.
Italy, which previously opposed the immediate cessation of russian gas supplies, is now demanding a cap on gas prices, which Rome says will deprive Moscow of some of its resources.
In addition to the embargo on energy imports, EU countries are currently discussing sanctions against Sberbank, russia's largest bank. According to Yurova, sanctions against the banking sector are likely to be adopted, as there are signs of consensus between EU countries.
The EU has already imposed five rounds of sanctions against russia, including an embargo on russian coal imports and a ban on russian and Belarusian freight operators in the EU.
