The United States and its allies are planning new sanctions on more sectors of the Russian economy that are crucial to continuing its invasion of Ukraine, including supply chains.

This was announced on Tuesday by US Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo, according to Reuters.

Speaking in London during a trip to Europe to consult with allies on strengthening and enforcing sanctions against Russia, Adeyemo said the expansion was aimed at undermining "the Kremlin's ability to control its military machine."

"In addition to sanctions against companies in sectors that contribute to the Kremlin's malicious activities, we also plan to take measures to disrupt their most important supply chains," Adeyemo said.

"These are actions we will take in coordination with more than 30 partners and allies who joined our coalition in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine," he added, without naming specific sectors or companies.

He noted that the multilateral response to Russia's aggression demonstrated that the international financial system and economic market were closed to those who do not adhere to the basic principles of territorial integrity.
