Prime Minister of Estonia has proposed an option of reparations from Russia to Ukraine
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has called for options on how Ukraine can receive reparations from Russia after the war to rebuild destroyed infrastructure.
She said this before the EU summit in Brussels, EP reports.
"We definitely need to discuss further sanctions, because we need to stop Putin's military machine. But there are also discussions about how to get funds to pay reparations to Ukraine. One of the solutions may be an escrow account where we will pay for oil and gas, but it can also be used to repair Ukraine. We need to start thinking about this in the face of destruction," Kallas said.
She also said that the summit should discuss the gradual reduction of Russian energy for the EU.
Note
An escrow account is a current account where funds are kept until all obligations under the contract have been met by both parties.
That is, Kallas proposes to spend on reparations funds that European countries have to pay Russia for gas and oil.
Earlier, Kallas called on NATO to increase support for Ukraine in the war against Russia. According to her, it is necessary to discuss how to reasonably increase defense spending and how to strengthen NATO's eastern flank, especially the Baltic states.
