President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy was invited to speak at this week's European Council summit.

European Council President Charles Michel announced this, CNN reports.

On the eve of a meeting of EU leaders on Thursday, Michel confirmed that "we invited him to speak at the summit."

He added that the European Council was the first assembly Zelenskyy had spoken of since the Russian invasion began on February 24.

Michel said he had spoken to Zelenskyy and the Russian president many times since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, hoping to help them achieve a "ceasefire and make a sincere path for negotiations possible."

"This is extremely difficult because we are not sure that the Russian government is sincere," he said.

"We must make sure that Putin is defeated. This must be a common goal. This is a matter of security, for the future of Europe and for the future of the world," he added.

The meeting of the European Council is scheduled for March 24-25, the main topic of the agenda will be Ukraine.
