Norway estimates that it will receive about 30,000 Ukrainian refugees this year, but is preparing for a situation that could bring in up to 100,000 people.

This was stated by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, according to Reuters.

If the arrival in Norway approaches the highest of these forecasts, the country with a population of 5.4 million people will have to place refugees in sports arenas, warehouses, and even tents, he added.

"This is not the most likely scenario, but we need to have plans and be prepared because it could happen," Støre said.

According to the UN, about 3.2 million people have left Ukraine in the last three weeks.

About 2,000 refugees have arrived in Norway so far, and the government said on Thursday it would soon receive another 5,250 people, including 2,500 who had left for Moldova.

Norway, which borders Russia, plans to increase defense and security spending by NOK 3.5 billion ($ 398 million) this year due to the war in Ukraine, Støre said.
