After 26 years of membership, Russia expelled from Council of Europe
The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has expelled Russia from the organization after 26 years of membership
This was reported by the press service of the Council of Europe.
To recap, the Secretary-General of the organization received an official notification on March 15 about Russia's withdrawal from the Council of Europe.
He also received information about Russia's intention to denounce the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
This decision was supported by 46 countries.
Russia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 28 February 1996.
The Russian flag was lowered near the Council of Europe building.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said that leaving the Council of Europe means Russia's withdrawal from all its mechanisms.
