"More than 80 adults and children are hiding there, including Turkish citizens," the statement said.

On March 11, Mariupol Mayor's Adviser Petro Andriushchenko said on Facebook that 86 Turkish citizens, including 34 children, were hiding in the mosque from shelling.

"The logical question is, does Mr. Erdogan know that Putin can destroy 86 of his compatriots at the moment? But will the nation's leader calmly watch the inhuman destruction of Turkish citizens, limiting himself to guaranteeing meaningless talks between Russia and Ukraine?" Andriushchenko wrote.

To recap, Mariupol is an important strategic city on the shores of the Sea of ​​Azov with a population of almost half a million.

The city is under constant fire from the Russian army. Since March 3, Mariupol has been effectively blocked by the Russian military.

The city has no electricity, communications, gas, heating, or even water.

Mariupol is in a state of a humanitarian catastrophe.

On March 9, Russian troops launched an airstrike on an orphanage and a maternity hospital in Mariupol. Three people, including one child, died. 17 people were injured, including doctors and pregnant women.

On March 10, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov explained the bombing by saying that "this maternity hospital has long been occupied by the Azov Battalion and other radicals."

Russia denies that it is waging a war of aggression against Ukraine on its territory and calls it a "special operation" aimed at "demilitarization and denazification."
