Russia wants to recognize Meta extremists and block Instagram

The Prosecutor General's Office of Russia asks to limit access to Instagram and appealed to the court to recognize Meta as an extremist organization

This was reported by Russian Interfax.

For example, Russia's Prosecutor General's Office is asking Roskomnadzor to restrict access to Instagram ("daughter" of Meta-EP) in connection with "dissemination of information materials calling for violence against Russians, including servicemen."

To recap, the tech giant Meta has allowed Facebook and Instagram users in some countries to call for violence against Russian soldiers amid the invasion of Ukraine.

Social media also temporarily allowed to publish calls for the death of Russian President Putin or dictator of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko.

At the same time, the aggressor's Prosecutor General's Office asked the court to recognize Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization.

"According to the Federal Law on Countering Extremist Activities, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation has sent a statement to the court recognizing Meta Platforms Inc. as an extremist organization and banning its activities in the Russian Federation," they said.

In addition, Russia has decided to open a criminal case against the company for articles in terrorism and incitement to hatred and divination with the threat of violence.

Earlier Roskomnadzor made the decision on blocking access to the Facebook network in Russia.
