Russia states it doesn't want to overthrow the current government in Ukraine

The tasks of the war did not include the overthrow of the current government in Ukraine, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Zakharova stated this during a briefing quoted by Interfax

"Its tasks do not include the occupation of Ukraine, the destruction of its statehood, or the overthrow of the current government. It is not directed against the civilian population," she said.

Note

The disaffection of the Ukrainian authorities to the Russian occupiers and the refusal to surrender Donbas is one of the reasons for the Kremlin's attack.

The president of the aggressor country, Vladimir Putin, calls Ukraine's leadership a "gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis" and the war a "denazification."

After a few days of the war, Russia, seeing its failure, began to change and reduce its demands.

On March 7, the Kremlin claimed that the demilitarization of Ukraine was coming to an end, and "denazification" was no longer mentioned.

On the same day, Bellingcat Chairman Christo Grozev announced that Russia had invited President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to remain in office.
