Biden stressed that "We are banning all imports of Russian oil, gas, and energy. This means that Russian oil will no longer be accepted in US ports."
He also noted that the decision to ban the import of Russian oil and gas will hit the United States itself, but Washington believes it should take this step.
"Protecting democracy comes at a price, but we knew we had to do it," Biden said.
He also said he had consulted with allies before making the decision, but said the United States was pushing for the ban, "realizing that many of our European allies and partners may not be able to join us."
"The United States produces far more oil domestically than all of Europe and all European countries combined," he added.
