Neutral Switzerland decides to join the EU sanctions against Russia
Neutral Switzerland has agreed to EU sanctions against Russians involved in the invasion of Ukraine and will freeze their assets.
This was announced today by the government.
This is a sharp departure from the traditional neutrality of the Alpine country.
"In connection with Russia's military aggression against Ukraine, Switzerland decided on February 28 to approve the packages of sanctions imposed by the EU on February 23 and 25," the government said in a statement.
Switzerland has also imposed financial sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which took effect immediately.
"Switzerland reaffirms its solidarity with Ukraine and its people. It will deliver humanitarian aid to people who have fled to Poland," the government said.
Swiss President Ignacio Cassis said on Sunday that it was "very likely" that Switzerland would also follow the EU's line with Russia.
