Stoltenberg said NATO doesn’t have troops in Ukraine, and ‘has no plans to send them”

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg spoke at a special briefing in Brussels on Russia's attack on Ukraine but has not given a direct answer as to whether the Alliance will provide military assistance.

"NATO supports Ukraine, is in close coordination with the EU, and partners around the world to impose tough sanctions on Russia. NATO allies have also provided practical support for a long time to strengthen Ukraine's Armed Forces," Stoltenberg said.

The Secretary-General was asked directly whether NATO plans to send troops to Ukraine, to which he replied, "that NATO will protect all its allies in the event of an attack, and therefore increased the presence of thousands of troops, ships, and aircraft on the eastern flanks."

When asked the same question a second time, he said NATO was trying to prevent the conflict by warning of Moscow's plans and threatening sanctions. "Russia has closed the door to a diplomatic solution," he said.

Stoltenberg later added that NATO has no troops in Ukraine and "has no plans to send them."

Stoltenberg added that the North Atlantic Alliance is convening an urgent video summit to decide on further action.

The Alliance has also activated a pre-designed defense plan that facilitates the movement of troops, including the Rapid Reaction Force, which also includes more than 100 aircraft and 120 ships.
