The UN Security Council is convening an urgent meeting due to Russian threat

The UN Security Council is meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday at 10 a.m. Eastern Time (5 p.m. Kyiv time) to discuss Russia's threatening behavior and troop build-up on Ukraine's and Belarus' borders.

According to Ukrinform in New York, the United States sent a request for a meeting after consultations with Ukraine and its Security Partners to Norway, the country holding the presidency in January.

It is expected that the UN Secretariat will provide the Security Council with information on the situation near the borders of Ukraine, and Russia's explanations will be heard. Ukraine is invited to participate in the meeting. Each of the member states of the Security Council will express its position on this issue.

"The Security Council must focus entirely on this issue, and we look forward to a frank and focused discussion on Monday," said Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the post-US envoy to the United Nations, who said it was crucial to international peace and security.

Russia must explain the "extraordinary increase in military power near Ukraine's borders and other threats and destabilization actions," a senior US administration official said earlier. He noted that Russia may try to misinform members of the Security Council.

At the same time, it was reported that Russia that took the place of the Soviet Union in the UN Security Council, could put the issue on the agenda, trying to block its consideration.

According to Article 27 of the UN Charter, "decisions of the Security Council on procedural matters shall be deemed adopted when nine members of the Council vote in favor" (a total of 15 members in the Security Council).
